New Birding Map Now Available For Dorchester County
Guide is for bird watching in the Heart of the Chesapeake
ANNAPOLIS – The Maryland Greenways and Water Trails Program and the Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Service in partnership with Dorchester County Tourism, are pleased to announce the production of a new trail guide “Birding in the Heart of Chesapeake Country”. This new publication guides birders along five identified driving routes to some of the best areas in Dorchester County to view various species of birds and spectacular scenery.
The guide features a colorful map, directions, and brilliant photographs. Birdwatchers, from novice to advanced, will find areas of interest and can choose from the Cambridge Waterfront Trail, Elliott Island Trail, Fishing Bay Rivers Trail, Taylors/Hooper Island Trail and the Blackwater Refuge Trails for a variety of habitats and species. Birds that are characteristic to Dorchester County include the American bald eagle, geese, various ducks, swans, great blue herons, egrets, shorebirds, songbirds and much more. Check the guide for particular areas along the trails that are recommended for viewing these feathered friends.
Some areas depicted on the map are quite remote and it is recommended that anyone unfamiliar with the area take along a map of the County with them before venturing out. The Birding Guide also indicates the location of public water access points, restroom facilities, and where refreshments or snacks can be obtained.
Copies of the guide are available free of charge by contacting the Maryland Greenways and Water Trails Program at 410-260-8771 or by sending an email request to kfleming@dnr.state.md.us. Guides can also be obtained by visiting the Visitor Center at Sailwinds Park in Cambridge. The Visitor Center is open daily from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Call 410-228-1000 for more information.
