Marylander's Grow Oysters - Govenor's Pilot Program Kicks Off on the Tred Avon River |
If you live along the Tred Avon River, you can be part of an exciting pilot project to grow oysters at your pier and to help create a living, diverse, oyster reef community. Not only will more oysters be placed in the Chesapeake Bay as a result of your efforts, but the rejunentated oyster reef will become a natural underwater ecosystem for all sorts of aquatic life.
The goal is to place 1,000 oyster cages at piers by the end of October, with four cages per pier. There is no charge for those who participate in this 2008 pilot project, but there are rewards both personal and ecological.
The Marylanders Grow Oysters Project was established by Governor Martin O’Malley, and is being managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources in conjunction with Talbot County, the Oyster Recovery Partnership, the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and the Maryland Department of Corrections.

DNR to Begin Stocking Trout in October for Fall Fishing Season |
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will stock approximately 19,000 trout into freshwaters across the state during October 2008. A small number of these will be brown trout averaging 3 to 5 pounds each.
Although stocking dates and locations are dependent on water flow and temperature, crews generally find conditions are right in many areas beginning the second week of October and stocking is usually complete by the end of the month. In most years, cool water allowed trout stocking in Delayed Harvest Trout Fishing Areas and locations such as the North Branch Potomac, Bear Creek, Town Creek, Blairs Valley Lake, Antietam Creek, Beaver Creek, Cunningham Falls, Rainbow Lake, Greenbrier Lake, Morgan Run, Patapsco River, Gunpowder Falls, Great Seneca, Wheatley Lake, Lake Artemesia, Greenbelt Lake, Big Elk, Deer Creek and Tuckahoe. We expect to stock these areas and numerous others as conditions allow.
DNR’s trout stocking information telephone line, 1-800-688-3467, will be updated weekly beginning Oct. 1 so that anglers may find out if their favorite area has been stocked. After daily stocking is completed, a list of stocked areas will be posted here online.
An Early Bird Special! The fisheries Service was able to get some trout out to the streams ahead of schedule, check out stocked locations on our Inland Fisheries page at www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/recreational/indexinland.html.

Get Involved With Striped Bass Management! |
|
The Cooperative Angler Striped Bass Survey is designed to obtain striped bass harvest data that is not otherwise available to MD DNR. The focus of the survey is to gather size data on harvested and released striped bass. These data are used by managers to determine the size structure of the recreational catch and to estimate the harvest in the spring striped bass season. This information is used to establish future creel and harvest limits that allow for optimum harvests while still protecting the resource.
Anglers are encouraged to participate year-round, on-line or by mail. Follow this link for more information on this important survey.
