Land Protection in Maryland

downstream of Swallow Falls Maryland has a long and distinguished history of protecting land for multiple public purposes–natural resource protection and management, outdoor recreation of many kinds, maintenance of rural character in a rapidly urbanizing state. Mechanisms for protecting land range from outright public acquisition of fee simple interest by the Department of Natural Resources and local governments, using funding from Program Open Space, through donation of conservation easements to the Maryland Environmental Trust, purchase of easements by the Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation or Program Open Space, and cooperation with private interests like The Nature Conservancy and Maryland Ornithological Society.
