Maryland Independent
Study and Internet Based
Hunter Education Program

The Maryland Hunter Education Program has developed an independent study and an Internet based program to provide alternative methods of delivery of the Hunter Education Course. The Independent Study Course requires that the student complete a workbook based on information provided in the student manual. The Internet based course requires that the student to satisfactorly complete an Internet based course of study. Both programs require that the student completes a one day field day which includes lectures, demonstrations, a hunter safety trail and a final exam. Click here to go to the Internet based hunter education site.

Basic Guidelines

You must be at least 14 years of age to participate in this program. A photo ID may be requried to be presented at the field day. You should allow a minimum of 8-24 hours to complete the workbook or Interent course. The workbook must be completed in its entirety prior to the class. Students completing the Internet based class will be issued a voucher to attend the field day. You will not be allowed to attend the class unless the workbook is completed or the voucher is presented. If you are taking the Internet based course, you may not register for the field day until you have obtained the voucher and provide the voucher number during registration.

Hunter Education Field Day

  1. Bring all of the Independent Study materials, including the completed workbook, with you to the class. Internet based students must bring the voucher provided in from the Internet class.
  2. You will be required to provide proof of age upon arrival (drivers license or copy of birth certificate). Failure to provide proof of age will prohibit you from continuing in the program.
  3. Your workbook will be reviewed by an instructor for completeness. If it is not complete, you will not continue in the certification process.
  4. You will participate in a lecture covering hunter ethics, basic firearm safety and handling, and tree stand safety.
  5. You must successfully complete a 50 question exam with a minimum score of 80%.
  6. You will participate in field exercises which will include firearms handling and live firing. You will be evaluated in each of these activities. These activities take place outside, so dress accordingly.
  7. Upon successful completion of all of the above, you will be issued a Certificate of Competency which allows you to purchase a hunting license.
