Dear Colleagues --
This morning I met with nearly 200 of our fellow DNR employees to begin a department-wide dialogue on creating a sustainable future for our agency, for the resources we manage, and for our state.
We talked about daily challenges we all face here at work; how difficult – yet critical --it is to think in the long term when it’s hard enough just to get through the day. We talked about the need to think outside the box, to reconsider how we relate to each other and how we do our jobs.
We talked about our need to think strategically about how we can better protect and enhance natural resources in the face of daunting challenges. We also talked about the need to integrate natural resource conservation strategies with social and economic forces at work in Maryland today. While some view this as just the latest strategic planning process, I encouraged those present to view this as the beginning of a dialogue about what we can do in our jobs to ensure a better life for our children and theirs.
We talked about Governor O’Malley’s strong support for our work. We talked about our responsibility, as one DNR, to lead by example, thereby encouraging our family, friends, neighbors and even other state agencies to become more “green.”
As I believe you know, we are hosting several more meetings across the state, in part in preparation prepare for a 2-day strategic planning meeting with stakeholders next month. This series of meetings is a first step in moving our agency forward, and we plan to have many more such opportunities to meet with you and hear your ideas in the future.
It is my sincere hope that each of you will make room in your schedule to attend one of these sessions (schedule below), participate in this important dialogue, and to play an active role as our work continues to evolve and progress.
Thanks and regards,
