BACKGROUND
The Department of Natural Resources is developing a
comprehensive Wildlife Diversity Conservation Plan to guide the actions of
the Department and our partners in the conservation of wildlife species of
Greatest Conservation Need over the next 10 years. These species of
Greatest Conservation Need include 500+ species at risk in Maryland and
are primarily declining nongame wildlife, threatened and endangered
species, and rare species. We received valuable feedback and comments at a
June 2004 public workshop on a draft list of these species. We have since
incorporated this input and finalized the list of species of Greatest
Conservation Need.
We next identified the key habitats that support these 500+ species. These
key wildlife habitats form the basis of the Wildlife Diversity
Conservation Plan. Thirty-five key wildlife habitats have been described
and mapped. The wildlife species of Greatest Conservation Need supported
by each key habitat have been identified. We have identified the major
threats to these habitats and a draft list of conservation actions. These
conservation actions are the core functions that are to be implemented to
conserve the species of Greatest Conservation Need.
WE NEED YOUR INPUT ON THESE CONSERVATION
ACTIONS.
Not only do we need you to suggest additional conservation actions for
each key habitat, but we also need you to help PRIORITIZE these actions.
Please review the Wildlife Diversity Conservation Plan on this website,
which includes information about the key habitats and their threats
and conservation actions prior to attending the workshop.
If you are unable to attend, you may submit comments via the webpage.
