During the last few months, we have been compiling and reviewing the comments that we received on our draft list of Species of
Greatest Conservation Need (GCN). Overall, 20 species were added to the list and 32 species were removed. The most substantial changes were made to the list of invertebrates. Within this group, 5 were added and 28 were removed. Of the vertebrates, 4 fish were added, 4 amphibians were added, 6 birds were added and 3 were removed, and 1 mammal was added and 1 was removed. At present the GCN list stands at 501 species. These lists have now been updated on our website.
We have also been developing a draft list of Key Wildlife Habitats. This list is necessary to fulfill the second of the eight required elements of the plan. However, it is also an extremely useful way to summarize the habitat needs of the “full array of wildlife”, while at the same time focusing on the GCN species. We are currently developing descriptions for these habitats and lists of the species found within the habitats. In the near future, we will add the list of Key Wildlife Habitats to this website for public review and comment. Stay tuned!
