About Earthspan...
Earthspan biologists fitting a tracking device on a hawk a not-for-profit, non-governmental institute created by a group of concerned scientists dedicated to natural resource conservation, ecosystem preservation and biodiversity.

EARTHSPAN seeks to apply advanced technologies, such as wildlife tracking via satellite, remote sensing, and geographic information systems to study and conserve biodiversity, and to use the resulting data to help preserve ecosystems and habitats. EARTHSPAN also seeks to employ modern technology to enhance education in conservation biology and to reach out to schoolchildren of all ages

Satellite tracking of wildlife is an advanced technique for monitoring movements of wild animals. It is an ideal way to monitor the movement of birds, such as bald eagles. From bird banding data, we know that immature bald eagles move around the Chesapeake Bay and elsewhere. However, bird-banding data did not allow us to determine daily movement patterns. Satellite tracking provides that opportunity.

EARTHSPAN has studied a wide variety of avian species, including Tundra Peregrine Falcons, Ferruginous Hawks, Swainson. s Hawks, Golden and Bald Eagles, Steller. s Sea Eagles and White Pelicans. The group has also tracked a variety of other animals, such as Pronghorn, Oryx, Wild Horses and Wolves.

How are these capabilities useful? The process of natural resource management and planning begins with a thorough inventory and description of a natural system's flora and fauna. This information is critical for the development and implementation of effective natural resource management plans, equally important throughout the world. This process can be difficult and expensive. Advanced information gathering and analytical technologies such as wildlife radio tracking via satellites and geographic information systems provide sophisticated, state-of-the-art methods to acquire and analyze otherwise difficult, expensive or unattainable data.
